Taking a valence-based approach, the present study offers insights into what creates inconsistencies in the cross-cultural examination of the effects of emotion suppression. Study 1 found that for American participants, the negative effects of emotion suppression on their life satisfaction (LS) did not differ according to emotional valence; however, for Korean participants, the effects of emotion suppression varied as a function of the emotional valence, such that negative emotion suppression predicted higher LS and positive emotion suppression predicted lower LS. Study 2 replicated these effects among Korean elementary school students, suggesting that learning cultural practices begins from a relatively young age.
