The purpose of this dissertation is to support Ricoeur’s thesis that has been maintaining the position of integrated mind-body dualism, has criticized the personal identity theory of mind-body reductionism, and established self-identity philosophy. Therefore, this paper focuses on establishing subjectivity through the discovery of who I am and raising awareness of the subject's responsibility. Since Descartes, the acknowledgment of the essence of soul and it has been objects of crucial philosophical controversy and the innate ideas has been a turning point of the separation of theistic and atheistic philosophy and . Ricoeur's Christian theist philosophy is at the forefront of controversy with mind-body reductionism. Ricoeur 's purpose, however, is not to debate with mind-body reductionism but to correct its errors by establishing the self-identity theory. Ricoeur 's self-identity theory established the new concept of the Self which differentiates into sameness and selfhood because mind-body reductionism misunderstood the the concept of the Self by ovelapping the two. Ricoeur suggest new framework integrating self-awareness and object-recognition by distinguishing two aspects of self, the sameness and the selfhood. While sameness provides a basis for recognizing the same person even when the appearance changes from infancy to the elderly, selfhood provides a framework that maintaining a personality by integrating all aspects that change with the flow of time into one person. Ricoeur provides character and acquires as examples of sameness, and keeping promises as selfhood. The mind-body reductionism overlaps the selfhood within the framework of sameness without distinction, and reduces the selfhood to sameness. Thus, the sameness conceals the proper personality derived from selfhood and makes to be misunderstood the variable as the invariable. The mind-body reductionism presupposes that memory itself is invariable, and if two memories have the same memory, the master of two bodies claims to be the same one. However, according to Ricoeur's study, when time and place change, consciousness and memory change. Therefore, even if we have the same memory as the same body at a certain point in time, we can not establish the logic that the master of two bodies is the same one as the mind-body reductionism claims. Ricoeur is particularly concerned about the serious injuries that Parfit's mind-body reductionism will bring about. Parfit not only denies the uniqueness of the individual's body but also insists that each one is driven to selfishness, which is devoted to self-interest, valuing oneself. Therefore, by presenting the theories of self-interest defeating, it is as if Parfit is able to overcome human selfishness and promote all-around egalitarianism. However, Ricoeur set defence against mind-body reductionsim, warning that Parfit's allegations erase human dignity and bring about totalitarianism. As mentioned above, the purpose of Ricoeur’s self-identity theory is to complement the problems of mind-body reductionism and to suggest alternatives. The 'narrative identity' and the 'little ethics' are also arguments for such purpose, and these two subjects embody the ethics which selfhood contains as ‘self–constancy’ as 'keeping promise'. In a life of changes, an individual maintains himself in the form of being endowed with ‘permanence in time’ through the fulfillment of promises made with others. When self-constancy appears in a narrative identity, the narrative develops into a dialectic of plot and time. While the beginning and end appear as the narrative is being developed, the physical time in the form of the event is converted into the time of meaning. As the narrative between the beginning and end of the story goes through twists and turns, the readers experience the exchange of personages while identifying himself with character. Ricoeur materializes the ‘self-constancy’ as ‘little ethics’. The core content of little ethics is to upgrade individual and mutual ethics to universal ethics. In order to accomplish the task, it is emphasized to proceed the moral verification in the middle stage. The moral validation criteria referred to Kant's categorical imperative, “Do not treat people as a means, but treat them for purpose.” The respect to these laws means that individuals who respond to Kant's request to "Act your rules to be the universal law.” Also, in order to be transformed personal ethics into universal ethics, it becomes necessary to accept the pluralism of various opinions and plurality of personality. That is why Habermas' ‘Discourse Ethics’ with its practical wisdom emerge and shine. Ricoeur adopts hermeneutics as a methodology for establishing self-identity theory. Ricoeur's hermeneutics is a study of interpreting the phenomenon, and the interpretation is only possible through reflection. Ricoeur's reflection and interpretation is ultimately in search of the testimony on God. According to Ricoeur, the voice of the Old Testament prophets testified the truth of God, the identity of narratives testifies to the narrative of the Bible, and the self-identity testifies the name of God. According to Ricoeur, the ultimate goal of every philosophy is to testify to God's existence and working. The atheistic philosophers or the Parfit’s mind and body reductionists are only blocking the ears of God's voice behind the phenomenological philosophical thought. If the researcher can go one step further by Ricoeur's logic, I think we can say: Everyone's life must be a life of witness to God. He testifies to God and man lives the life of God.
