Fluorinated polysiloxane is a material that combines the properties of polysiloxane and fluoropolymer. In particular, nonafluorohexyl-substituted polysiloxanes (PNFHMS) are widely used as key materials for display coatings and mold release agents in high value-added industries, because of their excellent water repellency and low surface energy. However, studies related to its synthesis are known to be limited. In this study, we investigated an effective method to synthesize PNFHMS through ring-opening polymerization (ROP) and provide precise control over its structure. For ROP, (F9D)3 was synthesized through the hydrolysis and cracking reaction of nonafluoroehexylmethyldichlorosilane. Although PNFHMS was successfully synthesized by ROP of (F9D)3, a significant amount of (F9D)4 was formed. (F9D)4 not only exhibits low reactivity toward ROP but also has a high boiling point, making it challenging to remove from the synthesized PNFHMS. Therefore, further studies to suppress side reactions, such as backbiting, which generates cyclic siloxanes, are essential for the efficient synthesis of PNFHMS through the ROP of (F9D)3. As PNFHMS is generally applied in the form of a copolymer with dimethylsiloxane rather than a homopolymer, the copolymerization of(F9D)3 and D3 through ROP was conducted to synthesize the copolymer. Contrary to the anticipated synthesis of a block copolymer due to the differing reactivity of the two cyclic siloxanes, a random copolymer was obtained, accompanied by the formation of various cyclic siloxanes. To achieve the synthesis of PNFHMS with a regular structure, (F9D)D2, composed of one F unit and two D units, was prepared. The ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of (F9D)D2 was anticipated to yield an alternating copolymer. Although cationic ring-opening polymerization (CROP) synthesized random copolymer contrary to expectations, an alternating copolymer was synthesized by AROP using (F9D)D2. It demonstrated that AROP offers better control over the polymer structure and reaction than CROP. This can serve as valuable foundational data for both the analysis of PNFHMS structure and the exploration of synthesis methods.
