Heungguksa Temple in Namyangju is the branch temple of Bongseonsa Temple, the headquarters of the 25th parish of the Korean Buddhist Jogye Order, and is located at the foot of Suraksan Mountain in Byeolnae-dong, Namyangju. Heungguksa Temple is a Wondang temple that manages the tomb of Deokheung Daewongun(1530-1559), the biological father of Joseon Seonjo(1567-1608), and was founded during the Three Kingdoms period and received a lot of attention and support from the Joseon royal family. The economic power of Heungguksa Temple, which had strong support as a royal temple, would have been attractive to Buddhist monk painters, Hwaseungs at the time. According to records in 1927, there were many Hwaseungs in Heungguksa Temple, and Hwaseungs in Heungguksa Temple were so talented that they produced Siwangcho. Therefore, this study examined the Hwaseung of Heungguksa Temple and the Hwamaek of Heungguksa Temple formed by them through Buddhist paintings. Heungguksa Temple is a place where many Hwaseung came and went. Various techniques and painting styles are identified to specify the Hwaseungs of Heungguksa Temple as a single painting school. Therefore, in this study, the Hwaseungs of Heungguksa Temple were defined as Hwamaek, which is stylistically connected in a larger category. Heungguksa Temple is a royal temple and was donated by royal members, court ladies, and rowing officials who formed the upper class of the Joseon Dynasty. It is confirmed that several Hwaseung came and went to Heungguksa Temple, which secured economic power based on the sponsorship of the upper class. In particular, it is believed that Hwaseung gathered around the 1850s to form a group and formed a Hwaso in Heungguksa Temple. In other words, Heungguksa Temple was a temple in the metropolitan area that served as a Hwasa Training Center with its status as a royal temple. Unlike other Buddhist paintings in the 19th century, these Buddhist paintings of Heungguksa Temple feature many or large figures. You can actively use gold decorations or use colorful colors to see the decorative and colorful appearance of the figure's clothing. This can be said to be a cross-section showing the economic power of Heungguksa Temple as a Wondang temple. In addition, the Buddhist painting of Heungguksa Temple shows the characteristic that it created a new painting by reinterpreting and reconstructing the existing painting. This aspect is not limited to Heungguksa Temple, but is also confirmed in other temples in the metropolitan area in the modern era. In the Buddhist painting of Heungguksa Temple, Hwagi remains in good condition. In addition to Hwagi, various records handed down to Heungguksa Temple showed who was the Hwaseung who stayed in Heungguksa Temple. In particular, the Hwaseungs who led the Buddhist temple of Heungguksa Temple belong to or are noteworthy in connection with the Buddhist scriptures of Hwa-ak Jitak and Hwadam Gyeonghwa, the monks of Geonbongsa Temple in Gangwon-do. Heungguksa Temple is a temple presided over by Giheo Tanhak and his disciples, who belong to a distant relative of the Jitak family, and it seems that the monks of the Jitak clan gathered at Heungguksa Temple in connection with the Jitak family. Heungguksa Hwaseung is largely divided into Hwa-akgye, which belongs to the Jitak clan, and Hwaseung, which is not a member of the Jitak clan, but is a disciple of the Jitak clan or a Buddhist monk related to the Jitak clan, and Hwaseung, which is unrelated to them. They show a difference in their duties in creating discord, and their relationship with the legal vein seems to have worked with some influence when creating discord. The Buddhist paintings of Heungguksa Temple can be divided into three periods in the mid-19th century, the late 19th century, and the end of 19th century. At this time, in the mid-19th century, which belonged to the first period, the Hwakgye Hwaseung, who was annotating Heungguksa Temple, led the creation of Buddhist paintings and began to form the Hwamaek of Heungguksa Temple. In the late 19th century, a group of Hwaseungdan was formed and developed around the Geumgok Yeonghwan related to the Hwakgye. It is confirmed that Gyeongseon Eungseok, a painter in the Hwa-akgye, has also been engaged in discord activities by annotating Heungguksa Temple since then. Yeonghwan and Eungseok played major roles in the Buddhist paintings of Heungguksa Temple and formed their own style and images. Subsequently, at the end of the 19th century, Eungseok led the Buddhist altar of Heungguksa Temple with Yeonghwan. The iconography and painting style of Yeonghwan and Eungseok, which were formed in the late 19th century, spread to other discord in Seoul and Gyeonggi at the time through other Heungguksa Hwaseung. This study examined that Heungguksa Temple served as a Hwasa Training Center based on its status as a royal temple. Based on its status as a Wondang temple, it is confirmed that Hwaseung gathered in connection with the Buddhist scriptures of the Hwa-ak clan. Hwaseungs gathered at Heungguksa Temple formed a Hwamaek around Hwaseung in the Hwa-ak clan and formed their own style of painting. Since then, as Heungguksa Temple gradually gained fame as a Buddhist painting, many Hwaseungs gathered at Heungguksa Temple regardless of the buddhist doctrine. They modeled the Buddhist paintings they learned at Heungguksa Temple and shared them, continuing the painting style of Heungguksa Temple Hwamaek. Heungguksa painting style gradually spread to a wider area through Heungguksa Hwaseungs who are active in the metropolitan area. The painting style of Hwamaek in Heungguksa Temple later influenced the feud between Seoul and Gyeonggi in the 19th and 20th centuries and became an example of buddhist paintings.
