It is no exaggeration to say that Confucianism and Buddhism are the most prominent ones among Asian religions. Especially, the Book of Changes holds a vital position in Confucianism; wondrousness of a book on divination and edifying contents of interpretations have been regarded as symbols of foresight. Buddhism has also been a symbol of Orientalism as Buddha’s teachings. ? Looking into the theory of the six stages on the way to enlightenment from “the I Ching Interpretation of the Zen,” accepted in a new way through the fusion of thoughts that are repositories of the East, this thesis will propose h the theory of the six stages on the way to enlightenment is applied and interpreted in “the I Ching Interpretation of the Zen,” and how a balance between Confucianism and Buddhism draws a conclusion that the theory of I-Ching and the Buddha-dharma are not distinct, but rather have one primordial truth,furthermore, the paper will indicate that the theory of the six stages on the way to enlightenment conveys that it is a way in a complete combination of interpreting the whole range of human experience not through the fortunes or misfortunes of the people but Buddha as suggested by the theory of Tien-Tai Buddhism, stating defilement or Bodhi, as well as that Jebeop is the true nature of the middle way through manifestation of six Buddha in six forms. With the spread of Buddhism from India to China, some concepts have been distorted; yet, blended with Chinese traditional ideas and values, Buddhism had been developed philosophically. Among such sects is Tien-Tai Buddhism. Moreover, as an open religion, Buddhism has always leaves room for further improvement as it does not settle for any dogma. For Chinese Buddhism had been modified and changed, corresponding Chinese people, Buddhism can be regarded as realistic evolution as well as flexibility itself.? As Buddhism first started in India and developed under the influence of Hindu thought, Buddhism carries Indian usages. If Buddha had been born in China, he would have preached in Chinese style in accordance with Chinese people and thought. In this context, “the I Ching Interpretation of the Zen” can be seen as the process of the fusion of Buddhism and “the Book of Changes,” and therefore “the Book of Changes” is interpreted as “Zen of Tien-Tai.”? As Eastern moral cultures, Confucianism and Buddhism have achieved recognition with their high philosophical values. However, it is pointless unless people understand and learn from such moral cultures when they come into real life. Analyzing an individual through the six stages on the way to enlightenment, we realize that though he is the underlying individual, he will reach the stage of Gukeyongjeukbul, and though he manifests at the state of one of the six stages on the way to enlightenment, he has the potentials to attain the Buddhahood. In the theory of the six stages on the way to enlightenment, every individual is given hope that every stage has the potentials to attain the Buddhahood from a perspective of the complete combination and made to get rid hubris through classification of Geun-gi. As such, we will be able to understand the true meaning of the innate Buddha-nature of every living being through the theory of the six stages on the way to enlightenment.? Adding eastern theories and ideas to Buddhism, which is the way of interpreting “the I Ching Interpreation of the Zen,” will enhance the position of Buddhism, and have people accept what Buddhas has taught more realistically. In addition, by realizing the meaning of the complete combination, people can build the Buddha-land, through Mahayana that is the ultimate goal in Buddhism.?? “The Book of Changes” that becomes even more familiar with us through the theory of the six stages on the way to enlightenment, wisdom of Buddhism, along with a understanding of the noble spirit of the Eastern world will allow us to spread the teachings of Buddha in a more enriched way.
