Design codes in railway bridges lack test methods and evaluation standards for waterproofing materials, resulting in usage of waterproofing materials inappropriate for railway bridges. To resolve this problem, this paper proposes a test method and evaluation standard for determining the performance level of waterproofing materials. To demonstrate the proposed test method, four waterproofing materials commonly used in railway bridges were tested: cementitious slurry coating (CSC), poly-urethane coating (PUC), self-adhesive asphalt sheet (SAS) and composite asphalt sheet (CAS) were subjected to concrete displacement to measure the resistance cycle and strain dispersion rate. To design the displacement conditions prior to testing, railway bridge deck cracks and displacement width (on which the basic performance level that the waterproofing layer should respond to) was derived based on an FEM modelling of a standard PSC railway bridge structure. To measure the effect of strain dispersion across a waterproofing layer installed on concrete surface, a strain gauge was attached to the gap between the waterproofing layer and the concrete structure at upper, center and bottom points of the displacement simulation specimen. The peak strain at the displacement interface was measured after. The test results showed that materials with high displacement resistance had high strain dispersion ratio. Materials from highest to lowest performance were CAS, SAS, PUC and CSC. The resistance cycle measurements showed strong applicability as a quantitative parameter for determining the performance grade based on a standard established in accordance to factors relevant to railway operation, exemplifying the application of cumulative tonnage and bridge span length. The strain dispersion analysis was able to establish different characteristics and response mechanism against stress concentration based on material bonding types on concrete surfaces, reaffirming the test results. For the proposed evaluation standards, two provisional grading system models were proposed, where one system relies on constant displacement width factor and the grade levels are determined by the total number of displacement cycles resisted. This was correlative to the cumulative tonnage system employed as part of railway operation. In the other grading system, the displacement resistance cycle count is fixed, and grade level is determined by the capacity of the displacement resistance based on increasing displacement width. This factor was thought to be attributed to long bridge span length design, heavier train loads, environmental degradation factors, that contribute towards higher deformation or moment in the bridge. The study results proved that a test method by simulating the displacement stress caused by concrete joint movement under hydrostatic pressure is required. Selection of waterproofing materials with certified resistance against displacement in railway bridge decks is possible with an evaluation standard based on a grading system relative to the railway bridge operation. As such, conclusion of the study outlines the proposed new test method and grading standard of waterproofing materials is thought to be highly applicable for use in railway bridges.
