Amidst escalating competition in the film production industry due to the growth of OTT markets, the need for high-quality film production is rising. Though the importance of narratives has long been considered as one of the factors that affect films in the production stage, little research has explored the impact of narrative characteristics on the success of films. This study examines the influence of dissimilarity between the topic of the introduction and conclusion of films on their success. We use topic modeling to measure the degree of the introduction-conclusion topic dissimilarity and employ Tobit regression models for the analysis. The findings show that introduction-conclusion topic dissimilarity increases the ratings and gross of the films, and this effect is weakened by the screen times.
