An experiment to characterize weak coherent states of light by using balanced homodyne detection is presented. By repeated measurements on the quadrature fluctuations associated with the electromagnetic field, the probability density is estimated through a histogram of the outcomes. The information about the state is then obtained by reconstructing the density matrix and the Wigner function. In addition, the sensitive nature of mode-matching between the signal and the local oscillator for the homodyne detection scheme is experimentally investigated, and a theoretical model is proposed to analyze the results.
