Reflective Characteristics Caused by Varying of the Core Thickness in a Hollow Optical Waveguide

We present the reflective characteristics obtained by varying the air core thickness of a hollow optical waveguide. A 3.56 μm-thick step was formed on one side of a slab hollow waveguide and the reflective characteristics were investigated. Total internal reflection was observed at an angle of 17˚ between the boundary surface and the incident light, which was a fairly large angle of incidence. In this case, the thickness ratio (D₁-D₂/D₁) of the hollow waveguide in the boundary surface was equal to or larger than 0.5. The reflective characteristics are proven to be controllable by using the ratio of the air-core thickness of the two regions in the hollow waveguide.
