An Investigation into the Use of Reading Strategies, Reading Proficiency, and Gender in a Chinese University Context

The purpose of the present study is twofold: to investigate the relationship between Chinese college students’ reading strategies and their reading proficiency and to examine whether students’ gender plays role in differentiating their English reading comprehension. Data were collected through questionnaires from 201 Chinese university students who study English as part of their curricula (male=44% and female= 56%). Results show that (ⅰ) the students’ use of reading strategies has statistically significant relationship with their reading proficiency; (ⅱ) there is no obvious gender difference in the students’ use of reading strategies; (ⅲ) the female students tend to use only problem-solving reading strategies slightly more often than their male counterparts.
