How can we talk about the journalistic quality of political articles? The changing digital technology environment and the highly partisan political environment give the impression that it is difficult to generate public forum that communicates the journalistic quality of political articles today. However, this study argues that despite the partisanship of journalists and audiences, the public forum of journalism in political articles has already been generated and operates, spurred by platforms such as YouTube. Through the journalistic public, the recipient and the journalist are observing the difference in their understanding of journalism. Observing this difference can be an opportunity for journalists to reflect on their own journalistic blind spots. Facing the audience’s journalistic grievances allows them to see problems in their own journalism that they might not have seen as a journalist. When the journalist practices transparency, it responds to the audience's grievances about journalism. Such a public forum for journalism allows both the audience and the journalist to gain a better understanding of the journalistic quality of Korean political articles. the resulting journalistic public forum will enable both the audience and the journalist to develop a better understanding of the journalistic quality of Korean political reporting. To argue the above, this study discusses the function and reflexion of mass media through Luhmann’s system theory and establishes a concept of the public generated through the topic of journalism. It then critically considers Kovach & Rosenstiel’s concept of transparency and discusses the implications of how journalists’ transparency practices enable the journalistic public. To illustrate the practical implications of this theoretical discussion, we add an analysis of the KBS and Alilleo’s contentious interview with Kim PB during the Cho kuk crisis in 2019. In particular, the transparency practiced by KBS’s “Journalism Talk Show J” and “Journalists Reading Comments” in front of their audiences stands out in the journalistic pubic that was generated at that time.
