This study aims to analyze the characteristics of the perception of research self-efficacy and influencing factors among STEM international doctoral students. Additionally, it seeks to thoroughly investigate various contextual factors shaping those elements. To achieve this, a mixed-methods research approach was employed, which included surveys and in-depth interviews with international doctoral students currently enrolled in STEM doctoral programs in South Korean higher education institutions. The key findings of the analysis are as follows. Firstly, when examining the research self-efficacy perceived by STEM international doctoral students based on research task types, it was found that they exhibit relatively higher self-efficacy in the area of research execution (data collection, analysis, etc.). However, their self-efficacy in research planning, academic writing, and presentation is relatively low. Additionally, perceived research self-efficacy varies significantly based on gender, academic stage, university affiliation, and country of origin. Secondly, concerning influential factors on research self-efficacy, the level of advisor’s supervision and the number of participated projects were positively associated with research self-efficacy. Conversely, the region of origin (Confucianism culture) and enrollment in major research-focused universities showed a negative relationship to the dependent variable. Thirdly, analysis from in-depth interviews indicated a close interconnection between various contextual dimensions, such as the advisor's supervisory style, cultural background, as well as international doctoral students’ English language proficiency and perception of Korean graduate education culture, characteristics of the affiliated university, and the level of project involvement.
