This research presented in this paper details the comparison between three highly regarded international lower limb prostheses embedding pneumatic, hydraulic and microprocessor-controlled prosthetic knee (MPK) and three newly developed prototypes. The proposed solutions were developed with an eye on minimizing the manufacturing costs while granting similar or higher ergonomics and field performances. Usability evaluation was conducted through a questionnaire based on PEQ and ADL while Gait analyses were conducted through a treadmill with a built-in pressure sensor. A total of 16 transfemoral amputees participated in the experiments that took place in a so-called “living lab” that imitates the daily living environment. As a result of the usability evaluation, all of the solutions are considered sufficient to replace benchmark devices. Among them, the microprocessor-controlled solution receiving the high score in the usability evaluation (191.67/250), showing a symmetry result with a step length ratio of 1.04 and gait velocity of 2.07 km/h. The hydraulic solution received the highest score in the usability evaluation (207/250) among the three types of prototypes, but showed a symmetry result with a step length ratio of 0.78 and gait velocity of 1.70 km/h. The research intended to provide feedback on the developed prosthetic knees and to present qualitative and quantitative protocols for prosthesis evaluation methods.
