In an open-field agriculture environment, crop cultivation involves high labor intensity for workers, necessitating improvements through robotic assistance for reduced labor and enhanced efficiency. However, several challenges arise in applyingrobots in such settings. The open-field agriculture environment, with its denselyplanted crops, limits the perception area of robots. Furthermore, the irregular characteristics of crops, such as varying sizes, shapes, growth directions, and quantities, complicate environmental information perception. This paper proposes a crop recognition and mapping system targeting open-field environments with these perceptionchallenges. Our system integrates an image-based crop recognition method withLiDAR-Visual-Inertial odometry in open-field orchard environments. Initially,YOLOv5 Segmentation is applied to images obtained from the camera for croprecognition. Subsequently, the crop recognition results are linked with the R3LIVEodometry algorithm. Through this, the proposed method in this paper constructs amap containing crop information within the working environment and simultaneously estimates the position of the robot. Based on the constructed crop map, wealso assess the fruit yield using RANSAC-based clustering. Experimental results innatural open-field environments confirm that the proposed method can recognizeover 70% of the total crops in real-time. With its capability to accurately recognizeinformation, the proposed crop mapping system is expected to accelerate the development of advanced robotic technologies, including crop harvesting and navigationin challenging open-field environments. This innovation has the potential to boostagricultural productivity significantly.
