본명이 강신태인 강건은 1918년에 경북 상주에서 태어나 10살이던 1928년에 부모님을 따라 만주로 이주했다. 1933년에 팔도하자농민적위대 대장으로 군사활동을 시작한 그는 동북항일연군에서 활동하다가 일제의 대토벌을 피해 1940년에 소련으로 넘어갔다. 강건은 소련 극동군 제88독립보병여단에서 김일성과 같은 대위 계급으로 제2대대 정치부대대장을 맡아 정찰활동을 펼쳤다. 1945년 해방이 되자 강건은 소련군과 함께 중국 연변으로 진출했다. 그는 이곳에서 동북민주연군 연변군분구 사령관, 중국공산당 연변위원회 당서기 등을 맡아 연변에 중국공산당의 토대를 구축했다. 2년 뒤인 1946년 7월 강건은 북한으로 귀국해 보안간부훈련소 제2소장을 맡아 본격적으로 북한군을 육성하기 시작했다. 1948년 2월 8일 북한군이 공식 창설되자 초대 총참모장을 맡았으며, 9월 9일 민족보위성 총참모장으로 임명되어 소련군사고문과 함께 북한군을 공격형군대로 육성했다. 1950년 6·25전쟁이 발발하자 강건은 총참모부를 전방지휘소로 개편한 뒤 6월 29일 서울 중앙청에 전방지휘소를 설치했다. 북한과 소련은 7월 4일 미군에 대항하기 위해 민족보위성 총참모부를 전선사령부로 개편했으며 강건을 전선사령부 총참모장으로 임명했다. 이후 그는 충북 충주를 거쳐 8월 24일 경북 상주에서 낙동강전투를 총괄 지휘했다. 그러나 9월 8일 전선사령부로 돌아오던 중 소련고문과 함께 지뢰폭발사고로 사망했다. 북한정부는 1950년 9월 10일 강건에게 ‘공화국 영웅칭호’를 수여했으며 육군군관학교를 ‘강건군관학교’로 개칭해 그를 기념했다.
Kang Geon’s real name is Kang Shin-tae. Kang Geon was born in Sangju, Gyeongsang bukdo in 1918 and moved to Manchuria in 1928. He began his military activities as the commander of the local Peasant Red Guards in 1933, and served in the Northeastern Anti-Japanese Union Army before moving to the Soviet Union in 1940 to avoid subjugation by the Japanese. He engaged in reconnaissance activities in the infantry brigade of the Soviet Far East Army with the same rank of captain as Kim Il-sung. When liberation occurred in 1945, Kang Geon advanced to Yanbian, China with the Soviet Army. Here, he served as commander of the Yanbian Military District of the Chinese communist army and established the foundation of the Chinese Communist Party in Yanbian. Kang Geon returned to North Korea in July 1946, took over as director of the second security officer training center, and began training the Korean People’s Army(KPA). He served as the first Chief of Staff when the KPA was officially established on February 8, 1948. When the Korean War broke out on June 25, 1950, Kang Geon reorganized the General Staff into a forward command post and established the forward command post in Seoul on June 29. North Korea and the Soviet Union appointed Kang Geon as Chief of Staff of the Front Command on July 4. Afterwards, he took overall command of the Nakdong River Battle in Sangju, Gyeongsang bukdo. However, on September 8, he was killed in a land mine explosion while returning to front headquarters.
