Hyecho(慧超), born in Silla(新羅), was a Buddhist monk who went to China to study Buddhism in Tang(唐) Dynasty. His reputation is built on his sea trip from China to India. His book Wang O Cheon Chuk Guk Jeon is of great historical value in studying religion, history and transportation routes in India and Central Asia in the first half of the eighth century. Based on previous research, this paper first introduces the background, the age of compilation and rediscoveries on the book. Then, it sorts out the locations of 47 countries recorded in this book, and examines the religious beliefs and social life of the countries concerned, by means of special products, clothes, food, and marriage. Finally, by analyzing the five poems left by Hyecho, this paper attempts to reveal Hyecho’s mental experience on his pilgrimage for Buddhism.
