Is the entertainment a mirror that reflects the times? Hutong and Miaohui are living spaces that contain the history and changes of traditional entertainment for children. After urbanization, some of the entertainment that could not be handled in public education were moved to large academies, private institutions, and gyms, leading to changes in space. Changes in space lead to the type, format, and diversity of participants. As entertainment for children embraced parts of the sports sector, it pursued diversity and individuality, growing into a cultural consumption industry. Combining the entertainment with large capital created the theme park 'Huanlegu'. Enjoying the special area as an ‘urban theme park’, it has grown into a large play facilities including everyone such as children, middle-aged people, families, and groups. Also, the fencing and soccer are accepted as children’s play, which is promoting the consumption as a play with specialized space. On the other hand, the change of form is also remarkable. Such traditional plays like top, kite-flying, and jianzi were developed into national-level leisure sports after exceeding children’s play, which became successful as popular entertainment. The development of ‘from play to sports, from sports to play’ could be done only because of the governmental support and close cooperation between sports associations. With the increase of diverse competition activities and permanent stage, it was settled down as leisure culture of civil physical activities. The value and role of children’s play are divided into two kinds. First, it obtained justice of protection and transmission as cultural heritage, and also settled down as cultural contents in the consumption industry. Second, it is the expandability of play space as a tool for communicating and exchanging with generations. Because the play reads the changes of the time and continues close communications with generations, the children’s play is an important case showing the growth of urban culture and the current state of cultural consumption in China. This thesis expects to see that the play could contribute to solving conflicts, perceiving the world through exchanges between various participants, and raising the value and meaning as social purification and cultural heritage.
