The chain dimensions of surface-grafted poly[3-(N-2-methacryloyloxyethyl-N,N-dimethyl) ammonatopropanesulfonate] on monodisperse silica nanoparticles (SiNP-PMAPS) were estimated in an aqueous NaCl solution over a wide range of salt concentrations by synchrotron radiation small-angle X-ray scattering and dynamic light scattering measurements. The scattering factors from SiNP-PMAPS in solutions were well described by the core-corona model, taking into account interacting self-avoiding chains and assuming a Schulz-distributed core with two fitting parameters. From the ratio of the radius of gyration to the hydrodynamic radius for PMAPS layer, the chain conformations of PMAPS brush on SiNP resembled semi-flexible polymer chains.
