RADIATION-INDUCED COLOR CENTERS IN ANION DOPED PHOSPHATE GLASSES

Anion related radiation-induced coloring of optical phosphate glasses doped with chloride or sulfate was studied by means of optical absorption spectroscopy and electron-paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. The effect of higher sulfate and chloride concentration (to 10 mol%) was investigated for fluoride-phosphate glasses with 10 mol% of Sr(PO3)2. Anion-related radiation-induced color centers suppress formation of some intrinsic phosphate-associated defect centers. Introduction of chloride leads to formation of paramagnetic Cl2- hole centers (HC) with absorption at ~310 nm. Substitution sulfate for phosphate results in formation of paramagnetic sulfur-associated electron-trapped centers, absorbing at~230 nm, and in increased formation of oxygen-associated HC absorbing near 290 nm.
