This survey sought to clarify the difficulties faced by nursing managers who participated in the "Competency-Based Training for Nursing Managers," which was sponsored by the Japan Academy of Nursing Administration and Policies Educational Committee, when using the concept of competency in their respective workplaces. It also sought to clarify their support needs for the utilization of the concepts. A questionnaire survey of nursing managers who had taken the competency training course between July 2019 and February 2022 was conducted. Responses were received from 49 managers, which amounted to a 25.8% response rate. Seventeen managers (34.7%) had introduced and begun implementing the concept of competency in their organizations to improve their nursing management and practical skills. Difficulties that many of the respondents identified were the "planning and management of competency training" (31 people, 63.3%), "understanding the concept of competency of trainees" (27 people, 55.1%), and "actual utilization after competency training" (25 people, 51.0%). There was high demand for the following types of support: provision of materials and learning opportunities for the smooth operation of organizational building and training to introduce the concept of competency into the organization, provision of teaching materials to facilitate learning about competency concepts, provision of learning opportunities to improve facilitator skills, and provision of opportunities for participants who had completed the course to interact and consult with each other. These findings may help nursing managers overcome difficulties when introducing and utilizing the concept of competency in their organizations.
