α-Amylase-like proteins were synthesized in a heterologous cell-free protein synthesizing system prepared from Escherichia coli. The proteins were precipitable with anti-α-amylase serum and detected only when RNA extracted from α-amylase producing Bacillus subtilis cells was used as messenger. The in vitro α-amylase-like products seemed to consist of two components having molecular weights of 30, 000 and 13, 000.
