The RAFT process is one of versatile methods conferring living characteristics on radical polymerization. In this work, we report novel synthesis of block copolymers by transformation of living cationic polymerization (LCP) from a vinyl ether with the RAFT polymerization moiety into radical polymerization. The key to success in the block copolymerization is to utilize an initiator of LCP with a RAFT polymerizable group such as trithiocarbonate and xanthate, followed by RAFT process of radical polymerization using AIBN. Using this polymerization system, novel block copolymers such as poly(vinyl ether)-block-poly(ethyl acrylate) and poly(vinyl ether)-block-poly(vinyl acetate) were obtained.
