It is well known that excessive salt intake leads to the incidence of hypertension and the occurrence of cardiovascular events. The Japanese Society of Hypertension's Guidelines for the Management of Hypertension 2019 advocated a salt intake goal of <6 g/day in hypertensive patients. However, the Dietary Reference Intakes for Japanese 2020 proposed the dietary goal of salt intake to be <7.5 g/day for men and 6.5 g/day for women. Since the current salt intake of the Japanese is approximately 10 g/day, aggressive and strategic promotion of salt reduction at the national level is necessary. The Salt Reduction Committee of the Japanese Society of Hypertension continues to work on the reduction of salt intake in Japan through a multifaceted approach, including the promotion of low-salt foods, enlightenment activities for citizens, and decreased salt intake education for children. A significant reduction in salt intake through these efforts is therefore indispensable for the primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular disease.
