Volatile materials emanating from leaves of S. leucophylla reduce oxygen uptake by mitochondria of herb seedlings. This inhibition appears to be localized in that part of the Krebs cycle where succinate is converted to fumarate, or fumarate to malate. It also appears that the permeability of cell membranes is decreased on exposure to terpenes.
