Despite substantial evidence of the learning value of trading simulations, they are rarely used in practice, mainly due to lack of supporting resources for faculty and the additional cost normally borne by students. This paper describes and discusses the most comprehensive and popular live trading simulation (StockTrak), which can be used in a variety of finance courses to enhance active learning by students. The objective of the simulation is to develop the analytical and decision-making skills of students, and to strengthen their knowledge. We use a centralized but flexible trading simulation so that faculty members do not have to spend time on the administrative tasks and students do not incur any financial cost. The open simulation has generated strong student participation. We illustrate use of the trading simulation in three courses with descriptions of the projects, an example of good answers, and grading rubrics.
