Efforts to reduce greenhouse gas (CO2) emissions are required in various fields for the urgency of greenhouse gas reduction due to global climate change. In this study, the current situation of food waste generation, systems, and policies were analyzed. The amount of food waste generated accounts for about 22-28% of the total amount of household waste, and it cause not only odors and polluted sewage occurring problems, but also economic losses for disposal. Food waste treatment methods domestically and internationally include collection/transportation and final treatment (door-to-door collection, automatic collection) and a small proportion of kitchen waste crusher and discharged to a public sewage treatment plant to combine sewage (biogas). Food waste is collected by vehicle and subjected to final treatment at a resource recovery facility. A huge amount of carbon dioxide is inevitably generated during the collection, transport, and final treatment at large scale facilities. In order to realize carbon neutrality and cope with climate change, measures are needed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions that can be applied not only to the reduction of food waste but also to its treatment technology.
