Recent studies on Kirishitan(キリシタン) have focused on the viewpoints of the people and the general laity. Of course, there are some differences in how the concept of “the people” is understood by different researchers, but basically, it is an attempt to examine their faith in detail based on an interest in the people who actually accepted Christianity. Furthermore, the study of Kirishitan people is a noteworthy area in that it has the potential to expand the meaning of research into the context of “People’s history,” in addition to simply looking at them as religious beings. In this paper, based on the Kirishitan people’s view of life and death and their view of salvation, we examined what they sought from Christianity at that time, how they approached and accepted it, and even how they were martyred, as people on the periphery of society and as socially vulnerable. In particular, the phenomenon of martyrdom among the general populace is itself a religious aspect that deserves attention as a reason for the Tokugawa-era prohibition of Christianity. In the end, when the faith of the Kirishitan populace is understood from the perspective of contextualization, it can be seen as one of the various religious figures that emerged as a result of indigenization.
