Research have shown high prevalence of mental illness and alcohol or drug problems among probationers. These mental health problems are also known to be correlated with the risk of recidivism. This study aimed to examine mental health issues and service needs among probationers in Korea. For this purpose, data were collected from 204 adult and 197 adolescent probationers using a self-administered questionnaire. Results showed that 16.7% had experienced mental health treatment due to psychosis. The most frequent mental health issue was depressive disorder (29.4%) followed by schizophrenia and manic depressive disorder. About 50% of probationers had received some treatment pertaining to mental illness, which showed a high prevalence of mental health issues among the population. About 50% reported risky drinking. 31.4% of all respondents supported the need for mental health services in the probation system. Results from adolescents indicated that 2.5% had received treatment for mental illness. Almost 22% reported having suicidal thoughts and 8.1% had attempted suicide. 10.2% expressed the need for mental health management within the system. 86.8% were drinkers, and 37.6% had begun drinking before the age of 15. The results indicated the need for attention to mental health issues among probationers and the need for system responding to the needs of mental health related problems.
