Recently, outdoor activities have grown into popular hobbies. Among them, climbing is so popular that it has been included as an official Olympic sport. Also in fashion, collaboration with outdoor and streetwear has emerged as a trend such as athleisure, techwear and gorpcore. The purpose of this study is to explore a Yosemite rock climbing subculture that hasn’t been considered as a major subculture in fashion and its fashion characteristic. To solve the research question, we conducted literature review to examine the history of Yosemite rock climbing and its subcultural characteristics and related subcultures. After literature review, we collected a total of 250 images from a documentary film about the history of Yosemite rock climbing, Valley Uprising and related publications, and we identified fashion characteristics through 23 images that reflect the subcultural characteristic of rock climbing. The fashion characteristics of Yosemite rock climbing are as follows: First, several subcultural styles in fashion that coexisted at the same time, such as beats, hippie, psychedelic, surfer and skateboard, were fused and expressed in a way that is appropriate for rock climbing. Second, rock climbers in the 1970s wore workwear and sportswear such as painter pants, rugby shirts and running shorts as rock climbing fashion and it was expressed into a functional pragmatic style based on the characteristics of each item. Third, since the 1980s, with the popularization of rock climbing, several sportswear and outdoorwear brands have begun sponsorship for climbers and rock climbing laid the foundation for a key inspiration for outdoor style and streetwear. This study has the academic significance in that it analyzed fashion characteristics focused on rock climbing subculture, and it is expected to be a cultural and historical basis for outdoor street fashion as a design inspiration.
