This study aims to evaluate sense of openness and interest in Seong-An Gil, Cheongju city and to ascertain factors influencing to them. This street is supposed to be lacked sense of openness because buildings are as thick as herrings by commercial area. Nevertheless, this street has to attract user’s attention with interest by commercial benefits. In this viewpoint, to evaluate sense of openness and interest on Seong-An Gil and to ascertain factors influencing to them are necessary in order to revive a stagnant commerce of the street. For that, questionnaires survey and interview were carried out focusing on Seong-An Gil of Cheongju city. The result is as follows. First, evaluators feel lower in sense of openness and interest on that street and it is in need of improvement of street environment. Closeness was caused by elements existing within the street environment while sense of openness and interest were attributed to elements existing surrounding the street. Second, denseness of buildings is evaluated as the physical element of sense of openness, height of buildings is mainly caused as dissatisfaction on sense of openness, the excessive contact with other pedestrians is mainly caused as closeness, and various shops are caused as the element of interest. Respondents evaluated not to get dissatisfaction on senses of openness by denseness of buildings; however, they began to feel closeness by denseness of buildings. Third, bump between pedestrians is evaluated as the reason of closeness. To improve crowded pedestrian volume of the street is to solve the potential dissatisfaction on senses of openness. Finally, it is necessary to establish a strategy that value and meaningfulness of Seong-An Gil as historical place are related to attractiveness and interest to that street.
