The King's Fund Nursing Development Units were established to improve the quality of patient care through the development of nursing. As a result of the various approaches to innovation used in these units six potential models were identified for integrating research and clinical practice. This paper describes these models and discusses their advantages and disadvantages together with the differences in terms of costs and outcomes.
