A wideband 60GHz chip antenna and the module packaging are proposed as an approach to provide wideband, small, and low cost wireless devices for developing 60GHz applications in the mobile communication. The proposed chip antenna is made of LTCC and the size is 1.25 × 2 × 0.4 mm. A grounded conductor is placed between stacked patch antennas in order to obtain wideband impedance matching. A feed line using a staggered via and the land grid array are employed to obtain good reproducibility in conventional surface mount technology. In this paper, the novel chip antenna structure is shown with some measured antenna characteristics. It is demonstrated that the chip antenna with the use of low-loss LTCC enables better radiation efficiency in comparison with patch antennas integrated into PCBs.
