The computer simulation of Automated Storage and Retrieval Systems (AS/RS) and warehousing systems often present the modeler with numerous issues dealing with modeling strategies. The modeler must decide the level of detail needed to represent the various components of the system in order to obtain results which can be used in the evaluation process. This paper considered in modeling warehouse components to be considered in modeling warehouse applications. It then discusses the different objectives modelers have in modeling storage facilities and the general concepts behind three modeling approaches which vary in complexity. The paper concludes with an example of the detailed warehouse modeling approach for tracking individual products and storage locations.
