This paper presents a new real-time estimation algorithm for the SoC of a Li-ion battery using the sliding mode observer. A RC equivalent circuit model is utilized to express a Li-ion battery. A terminal sliding mode observer is developed to estimate the SoC of a battery accurately. Compared to the existing sliding mode observer used for SoC estimation of a Li-ion battery, the internal uncertainties are taken into consideration during the design of observer. The design of terminal sliding-mode observer attenuates chattering existed in traditional sliding-mode observers. The estimation results validate the proposed method.
