DC mode and Planar mode are suitable to predict flat area and angle modes can well predict blocks with a single direction texture. However, above modes can not predict complex blocks effectively, whereas the correlation between the chroma and the luminance is quite high. To address this issue, this paper firstly proposes a chroma component prediction algorithm based on luminance template matching, and then improves the original HEVC chroma DM mode. Since chroma blocks of different size have different texture characteristics, different fusion algorithms are used for different template matching algorithm. The improved DM mode of the current chroma block uses the neighbouring chroma modes and the corresponding luminance block is taken into account. Therefore, the correlation between chroma and luminance is sufficiently utilized. To further improve the coding performance, convolutional filtering is used for chroma blocks with size under 32×32. The experimental results indicate that the algorithm proposed in this paper shows superior performance compared with HEVC standard, with bit rate saving 1.49% and 1.68% on average for Cb and Cr component respectively. And the average utilization of proposed mode is higher than that of some other original chroma intra prediction modes, which proves the effectiveness of our algorithm again.
