As increased social activities can lead to higher demand for electricity and greater stress on the transmission system, live-line working on 220kV transmission lines turns out to be particularly important during periods of economic growth. This paper proposes a new approach for supporting distance-based live-line monitoring using large-scale point cloud. We show how to carry out real-time distance evaluation using the Chinese BeiDou-3 system (BDS-3) and the three-dimensional (3D) point cloud data of the 220kV transmission lines. We suppose each live-line worker has been equipped with a suite of location-receiving antenna that is connected to Beidou differential devices to provide centimeter-level personal positioning information. We highlight a feature-based point cloud simplification method that can significantly reduce the complexity of point-wise distance calculation. The methods are evaluated on large-scale point cloud data composed of serval hundred million of points. The experimental results reveal that for the real-time monitoring task on each transmission line, the method can reduce 90% of the point-wise distance calculation with negligible deviation.
