Vehicle driving process is affected by many factors including roads and vehicles. It is difficult to work in a complex traffic environment by using a safety distance warning system based on dynamics and kinematics. To improve the prediction accuracy and safety of collision warning systems (CWSs) in complex situations, this study designed a potential field model substitute for the tediousness safety distance model. After establishing and analyzing the model considering vehicle and road conditions, the potential field forces generated by the potential field model are analyzed and normalized. New metrics are defined to assess the driving risk level for crash warning judgments. Simulation analysis is performed to verify the effectiveness and adaptability of the proposed method.
