We explore the possibility of the phase object calibration in schlieren imaging with a diffractive optical element. The light source passing through the diffractive optical element forms dotted pattern at the screen. These rays are refracted by the schlieren sample which is placed in front of the screen. The refracted and original pattern are captured by using charge coupled device (CCD) camera and the displacement of patterns, displacement magnifications, refraction angles and the phase image can be obtained from the cross-correlation of these images. The performance of proposed method was confirmed by imaging the burning candle.
