The failed elements will cause unacceptable pattern distortion for the phased array antenna. This paper presents the shifted base mode character of the array with failed elements from spherical near filed measurement. Firstly, the phase reference origin of the near field is mathematically shifted to the position of each element of the array one by one by sparse sampling. Then each shifted near field can be represented with some orthogonal modes. The base mode shifted to the position of faulty element will change significantly compared with the one shifted to its adjacent element. This shifted base mode character can be utilized to fast diagnose the faulty elements from small number of near field measurement. Furthermore, this method can avoid the tough requirements of far-field measurement, such as far measurement distance or complex compact test range.
