This paper introduces two sensors for permittivity characterization by improving a single-ring complementary split-ring resonator (CSRR) structure. The first sensor incorporates a spiral shaped defected ground structure (SS-DGS), while the second sensor utilizes an interdigital capacitor shaped defected ground structure (IDCS-DGS). The proposed two sensors and traditional dual-ring complementary split-ring resonator (DR-CSRR) were compared through loading same series of materials under test (MUT). The variations in the transmission coefficient resonance frequencies were quantified. The results show that both proposed sensor structures exhibit improved sensitivity for permittivity characterization of dielectric materials. Compared to the traditional DR-CSRR sensor, with the IDCS-DGS sensor achieving the highest sensitivity improvement of 57%.
