A novel hybrid precoding technique is proposed for multiple input multiple output (MIMO) orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) based visible light communication (VLC) systems to address the adverse effect of memory non-linearity and high correlation of typical indoor channel. Our insight is to leverage the well-designed unitary matrix to average the degradation of sub-carrier data and utilize the singular value decomposition-based precoding to spread the correlated channel into independent parallel sub-channel. In addition, an analytical characterization of signal to nonlinear distortion and background noise ratio is presented to reveal the internal relation among nonlinear distortions, channel correlation and system performance. The bit error rate (BER) of the proposed scheme is investigated via detailed numerical simulations. Excellent BER results indicate that the proposed scheme can reduce the influence of nonlinear distortion and show relative robustness to the channel correlation to some extent, demonstrating the prospect and validity of this methodology.
