The quench detection and fault protection of high- temperature superconducting (HTS) cables are the core and foundation of ensuring the safe operation of HTS cables. Because the great difference between the structure and fault mechanism of HTS cable and traditional cable, the protection configuration and implementation principle have not yet formed a unified understanding. Based on the analysis of the fault types of HTS cable and the mechanism of quench fault, this paper proposes a comprehensive configuration scheme combining short-circuit protection and quench protection according to the performance characteristics and influence consequences. In view of the special and complex protection functions such as sequential action protection and inverse time overheating protection, the specific principle and implementation method are given.
