In this paper, the stopband performance of the stacked-mushroom electromagnetic band gap (SM-EBG) unit cells with different layers is further investigated in detail. Furthermore, the novel relationship between metal via hole in substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) technology and SM-EBG unit cell is also studied in regards to stopband performance. The systematic study of the SM-EBG unit cell may enable its application in device and antenna packaging, particularly in the millimeter wave band.
