A high power density partitioned stator compound modulation hybrid excitation generator (PSCMHEG) is proposed in this paper. The proposed machine adopts double-stator structure, the outer stator places the armature winding which is connected with the external circuit for power generation, the tangential magnetized permanent magnet (PM) and DC field winding are placed in the inner stator to provide the static excitation source. Sandwiched between the stators is a cross arranged rotor with rotational excitation and modulation made of segmented iron pieces and radially magnetized PMs. The operation principle of the proposed machine is introduced based on magnetic field modulation, and the advantages of the machine are discussed in terms of synchronous modulation and asynchronous modulation. The results of the 2D finite element analysis demonstrate that the proposed machine has a wide flux regulation range, the output power can reach 20 kW and the power generation efficiency can reach 78% when compared to a claw-pole generator of the same volume. It is suitable for special vehicle power generation or aviation power generation and other applications.
