In this work a broadband microstrip hybrid coupler is designed and rf tested for X-Band applications. Simulation and rf tests of a two-section X-Band hybrid coupler using microstrip lines are conducted. By unequally reducing the wave impedances of longitudinal and transverse branches of hybrid splitter, good amplitude and phase imbalance between two output ports are obtained. X-band microstrip line coupler using Taconic TLY-5 as substrate material with low dielectric constant of 2.2 has wide bandwidth of 44%, amplitude imbalance of ± 0.7 dB, and isolation of 15 dB in the frequency range of 7.8 GHz ∼ 12.2 GHz. The proposed 3 dB hybrid splitter will provide not only ease in the process the fabricating broadband hybrid coupler, but also allow low cost production avoiding miniaturization difficulties for high frequencies application such as Ku- and Ka-band.
