Multiuser MIMO (MU-MIMO) detection as an essential part of the receiver is crucially important for wireless communication. This paper presents an expectation-maximization (EM) based detection algorithm with reduced complexity for downlink MU-MIMO systems. First, we decouple the original multiuser data detection problem into several separate single-user MIMO detection problems based on the EM method. Next, each optimization problem can be solved by the sphere decoding algorithm alternately. The decomposition and maximization perform iteratively until convergence. Simulations in various cases demonstrate the superiority of the algorithm in comparison with linear detectors, as well as the complexity efficiency against multiuser and dense constellations.
