Vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication environments and big data analytics are emerging technologies that have the potential to solve urban transportation challenges. These challenges include traffic congestion, road accidents and delays. Understanding the technologies and their requirements to enable the intelligent transportation system (ITS) is crucial. Hence, the analysis of various V2I communication technologies for urban public transportation is important. This paper reviewed the V2I-based technologies and systems to improve public transport, particularly in Kigali city. A survey was conducted to assess and understand people’s perceptions towards the realization of V2I-based technologies for ITS in Kigali. The findings show that long wait times and delays in mobility are a problem for public transport users and the adoption of V2I will improve service quality.
