Well-illuminated crosswalks play a vital role in improving the visibility, recognition, and reaction time of drivers, consequently reducing the risk of accidents and enhancing overall pedestrian safety. Typically, overhead fixtures on nearby poles ensure proper illumination of crosswalks. However, they do not warn approaching drivers about pedestrians crossing the streets. To address this, an additional intelligent illumination system was proposed. This can detect crossing pedestrians and gradually switch on in-ground LEDs aligned with the crosswalk. The effectiveness of this adaptive lighting system was validated through illumination simulations, demonstrating its usefulness in safeguarding pedestrians during road crossings.
