The design approach for the 3D imaging radar evolution has been based on W-band FMCW technology. The linear FMCW waveform can be processed in full at the max resolution or in part for frequency diversity at a lower resolution. Both approaches have been used. This 3D waveform and processing approach has been under development for ten years first under NASA funding and now under AFRL funding. The design has evolved to the point where useable 3D data is now being obtained. For the future wider bandwidths are being planned for smaller size and higher performance radars. Preliminary results from these waveforms and associated system architectures have been extremely positive, showing that these systems will be realized in the very near future.
