This paper describes a simplified technique to estimate the rotor position of the permanent magnet synchronous machine (PMSM) for sensorless vector control in the applications where no starting torque is required. It is generalized for any kind of PMSM, only requiring the terminal voltages and currents by employing a phase-locked loop principle. The proposed scheme shows the merit of simplified calculation so that it can be implemented easily by most microprocessors available on market, although its dynamic response is somewhat limited. Experimental verification is also given in the paper to demonstrate the viability of the scheme.
